Are electric scooters illegal in the UK?

Under current UK law, privately owned electric scooters are illegal to ride on public roads. They are only to be used on private land with the landowners permission. There are changes to this law planned to come in the near future. On the 10th of May 2022, the government announced in the Queen’s Speech, that electric scooters are set to be legalised. However, it is expected to be at least another 12 months from this date before the Transport Bill is passed through Government and therefore the laws will be amended.
